Kunbarlang Lerrk Language

The Kinbaddabarlang or Kunbarlang people are the custodians of a stretch of land along the Arafura Coast in the Northern Territory (Australia), between tracts of land owned by Mawng and Njébbbana people. Today Kunbarlang people mostly live away from their traditional country, in the multilingual northwestern Arnhem Land communities of Warruwi (Goulburn Island), Maningrida, Minjilang (Croker Island) and Gunbalanya/Oenpelli, as well as in the capital of the NT, Darwin. Although only some people speak Kunbarlang ‘right through’, many people still identify with Kunbarlang as their language or have connections with Kunbarlang. Many people still ‘hear’ or understand Kunbarlang.

Kunbarlang speakers have worked with linguists since the 1960s to make recordings of their language. Kunbarlang people and other community members have continued to work with linguists to make recordings and materials in Kunbarlang, so that young people and children can learn more.
